The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。1980年代初，黄山农村姑娘龚玲玲（李羚 饰），为替家还债，只身赴京城当保姆。刚进城的农村人不免被个别城里人用异样目光看待，玲玲也不例外。初到齐家，主人一家总对她的行为产生不信任，连买个莱也怀疑她做了手脚。尽管终日埋头苦干，始终得不到主人的好评，最终因为一件毛衣的丢失，玲玲不堪侮辱，冒雨离开齐家。转入赵家照顾产妇柳红荣（赵雅珉 饰），相同的命运很快使两人情同姐妹。不久柳遭丈夫抛弃，生活的拮据使她无力承担玲玲的工资，玲玲无奈离开。后经同乡介绍，她辗转来到周家，周家待她视如已出，她不仅学了一手烹饪技术，还练就一手好书法，并在周家的帮助鼓励下，办起了知青饭店......。
